How do I cook the fresh okra I just bought?
I usually get the frozen kind, but decided to get the fresh/whole okra this time....How do I wash and prepare it? I'm not planning on frying it, slice it and microwave maybe? Thanks :)
There are some answers for your reference as below, you can choose your best answers
this is very easy and simple. just wash your okra put in a pot of water season to taste and boil until tender. that's it.
You can bake it... Add some cayenne pepper, salt, black pepper, and mix with a bit of oil. Spread in a pan and bake it till crisp and nice.. yumm!!
You ever try okra and tomatoes together?? Yum!
2 Tbsp olive oil
2 cups okra
1 cup tomatoes
1 clove garlic minced
1/2 onion diced
salt and peppar to taste
Heat a large saute pan on medium. Add the oil. Saute together the onions and okra, then add the tomatoes and garlic. Season to taste, and Tah-Dah... Delicious!!
rinse it well in a collander, pat dry with paper towels, slice into 1" pieces put a cup or so corn meal and seasonings of your choice in a paper bag, shake the okra pieces til coated, spray a baking dish or lightly coat with vegetable oil, bake at 350 turning it after 20 minutes or so. 40 minutes should get it nice and crispy
Wash and slice thick. Prepare breading: Flour then eggwash, then seasoned flour ( paprika, salt, pepper, garlic powder and season salt). Deep fat fry in shortening or peanut oil. Until golden brown.
I am a former chef and like it the way the second lady suggested, but add a dash of vinegar or lemon juice to it, even with the acid from the tomatos it can still be a bit slimey, but that will cook off, lots of onions and even some diced celery, garlic, the cut okra, add a can of diced or plum tomatos, fresh ones are good to, simmer for 20 minutes and the do the final seasoning and add either the vinegar or lemon juice if there small they cook fast if bigger and seem fiberous when cutting you will need to cook them for the full 20 minutes.
Oh! Too bad you aren't frying it! I LOVE FRIED OKRA!!
I can eat a whole plate of that good stuff! With cornbread and a good steak!!
Wash it down with lemonade!
OKRA NATION!
i like raw okra with a chive and cream cheese spread. its good for sandwiches and in soups as well.
