Would you call Hamburger Helper "dinner" or a "dinner substitute"?

I would say the latter. It looks like something inmates get although I know their food is MUCH worse lol. Anyway Do you think it's crap or not & why? :)
There are some answers for your reference as below, you can choose your best answers

Hamburger helper is GROSS! Definitely dinner substitute.

Definitely a dinner substitute....if even that!! I tried it once, and decided the time and effort to make it from scratch is well worth it!!

I would call it a cheap ticket to an early grave food. That kind of "food" is jam packed with fat, sodium and calories. The "cheese" is just like that macaroni and cheese in the box - which is to say that it's not really cheese, it is chemicals and additives. Luckily, I grew up in a household that never ate this kind of junk and I don't plan on changing that when I have kids either.

It's something only little kids and drunk college guys can eat

I don't think it is crap or junk food. It is for those who are too lazy to take the time to read cookbooks and learn to cook.

I tried hamburger helper one time, a very long time ago!! I didn't like the generic taste of it, so doctored the remaining packages that were given to me. Adding herbs and spices helps a lot.

Otherwise it tastes just like any institutional food product!! Mass production with no individual identity! You can find this in all hospitals, schools, generic restaurants, etc.

It is Dinner! But it is not Cooking!

I llooovvvveeee Hamburger Helper!
When I go home to visit, that is what my momma makes, lol. But she makes it with turkey, and it's DELICIOUS, mmmm.

If you are a working single mom with no time to spare, it is a great dinner along with a vegetable.
If you are a stay at home mom, or only work part time, it is a cheat that you can afford to avoid.

Well .... nothing like "hamburger helper" is for sale in Denmark, but from living in the US, I remember it as something you mix in the ground beef to "stretch" it, not something you eat by itself .. or am I totally wrong?

Of corse it is dinner. Fast food is a dinner substitute. You actually cook this at home
